Phil Charte Functional Art

“My style is constantly evolving — an organic melding of form and function. My pieces can stand alone as sculpture, or be used in a more practical manner. I use many parts of trees — branches, roots, and trunks, along with vines and other recycled materials. One of a kind, all of my works are appropriate for enjoyment and use in the home, workplace, or a meditative environment.”

Phil's personal stamp on each piece of his work

Phil Charte was born in Bangor, Maine and has spent most of his life in the beautiful Northeast. H now lives in Salem, New York, a small village on the Vermont border near the Adirondacks. These woodlands and hills are where the artist finds his raw materials, as well as the inspiration for his functional artworks. An avid outdoorsman, Phil has spent much time hiking through the woods of New England and upstate New York. Contemplating trees, their branches and roots has led him to conclude that “wood, like all things in nature, has innate flaws....I find these flaws to be beautiful and I seek to bring them out in my artwork.”

For over twenty years, Phil has been a finish carpenter and a cabinetmaker. He has done restoration work on many homes that are listed in The National Register of Historic Places.

Phil’s functional art pieces are one-of-a-kind, and he is available to do custom work.
